Foreign-owned businesses are a large factor in the Pittsburgh region’s economy, with 340 companies from 30 countries and a workforce of 49,000.
Germany has the most companies here, with more than 70 who account for about 11,000 employees. German companies have been in the region since 1907. Pittsburgh continues to attract German companies, more recently also from the renewable energy industry.
Since 2008, at least eight German companies invested in the region. One more claim to fame: In April 2009, the world-famous Munich brewery-restaurant company Hofbräuhaus opened a 17,000 sq. ft. facility near Pittsburgh’s waterfront. It is Pennsylvania’s only Hofbräuhaus.
