Q. I have forgotten my password. How do I get in?
Click on the "Mail me my password" link on the login page. This will only work if you are still using the same e-mail address that you used when registering in our database. If you are unable to access your account anymore, it may have expired.
^ TOP
Q. I've found only relatively few job postings in your database. Why?
Other than some much larger job boards, we don't believe in running outdated job ads long after they have expired. We consider this a disservice to both job seekers and employers.
Many of the career opportunities offered by companies through the Germany-USA Career Center are never advertised, not even on this site. Our clients use the specialized Resume Library, the core feature of the Career Center.
This is where companies expect to find our applicants' resumes when they need them. At any given time, the number of leading U.S.- and Germany-based companies with access to our Resume Library is larger than, for example, the number of current job postings.
This is a niche market, after all. Our partners don't expect job seekers to visit this website on a daily base just to check for new ads.
Our applicants are encouraged to keep their resume updated, and to log into their Germany-USA Career Center account at least once every six months and keep their information current.

Q. JobAd Plus: How do you send out my ad?
Your Germany-USA Job Mail, as part of our JobAd Plus service, will be sent out as a one-time, single message on our mailing list for applicants. The list is permission-based, 2-tier opt-in - we actually ask our Job Mail subscribers to verify/confirm their subscription, even after they have already submitted their email.
The result: You can be sure that our Job Mail recipients really would like to hear from you!
Also, in order to not mix messages and interfere with your company's employer branding, your message will not be combined with that of other Germany-USA Career Center advertisers.

Q. How can I post a "Position Sought" ad (German: "Stellengesuch")?
Once you have created your free job search account at the Germany-USA Career Center, you have the option to announce your availability for long-term employment or contract work to companies and recruiters by posting a Position Sought / Stellengesuch advertisement on this page.
While "Stellengesuche" are more common in Germany than in the U.S., we recommend this option if you
- prefer to keep your identity private, because you don't want your current employer to find out about your job search;
- don't have your CV / resume ready yet for upload into our database (it's free), but would like to get your search started anyway;
- would like to get "on the screen" of companies and recruiters in your industry who use Internet search engines to find potential employees like yourself.

Stellengesuche - Position Sought Ads
Q. What is the difference between a Position Sought Posting and the CV Alert?
The CV Alert service sends the resume and contact information of an applicant to the companies and recruiters on our proprietary email list, to alert them to the availability of a candidate.
Position Sought Ads - in German: "Stellengesuch" - are very common in Germany. Candidates post an advertisement, in German or English, to announce their avalability for employment, while often keeping their identity confidential. When a company or recruiter responds to their Stellengesuch on the Germany-USA Career Center, they decide which information to share.
^ TOP
Q. Who should consider a Position Sought Posting (Stellengesuch)?
"Stellengesuche" are quite common in Germany. We recommend the Germany-USA Career Center Stellengesuche service if
- you prefer to not disclose your identity (optional), because you don't want your current employer to find out about your job search;
- you feel that it better accomodates your specific job search situation, or regional / industry preferences;
- you are looking for employment in a city/region that is not a "hotbed" of business between the U.S. and Germany;
- you don't have your CV / resume ready yet for upload into our database (it's free), but would like to get your search started anyway;
- you want to cast a "wide net", and want to stand out on the Web, perhaps with a link to your favorite professional or social network or professional CV on your personal homepage;
- you would like to get "on the screen" of companies and recruiters in your industry who use Internet search engines to find potential employees like yourself.
Please note: "Position Sought" postings from German and American job seekers are publicly accessible and can be viewed free of charge on the Germany-USA Career Center website. They are, however, in no way representative of the structured and pre-screend resumes in our database, which can be accessed solely by employers and recruiters.
You need a free Germany-USA Career Center job search account in order to post your Position Sought / Stellengesuch posting. You can activate your Stellengesuch posting without uploading your resume into our database.
^ TOP
Q. How long does it take for my Position Sought / Stellengesuch ad to get published?
We actively monitor the Position Sought / Stellengesuch service. Postings require approval in order to get published. Please allow for up to 8 business hours (U.S. Eastern Standard Time) for your advertisement to appear. In most case, it will not take more that an hour.
^ TOP
Q. What is the success rate of Stellengesuche / Position Sought postings?
There is a reason why specialized headhunters and companies in our niche have bookmarked, and very frequently visit, our "Position Sought / Stellengesuche" page.
As a general rule, the more professional, specific and consistent the posting, the higher the chances that it will be noticed by recruiters and hiring managers searching the Internet.
We do not control the "content quality" of postings in this service category. Any communication resulting from such postings is entirely between its author and the responding company/recruiter.
The response rate of individual postings depends on a large variety of factors, most of which we are unable to influence.
However, through their free account, Germany-USA Career Center members have access to useful tips and a hotline number for getting help with creating a compelling, successful Stellengesuche posting.

Q. How can I access the hidden job market in this niche?
You may have heard the number: More than 90% of available jobs in this recession are not advertised. Not here, not anywhere else.
To learn about them first, you have to access the famous "hidden job market". But how?! In the case of trade and industries between the U.S. and Germany, the answer is simple: the Germany-USA Career Center is your key to these non-advertised opportunities.
Even in better economic times, the job market in trade and industries between the U.S. and Germany is pretty much a "hidden" one, due to its niche character and high specialization requirements for its workforce.
Helping you access your "hidden job market" in this niche is exactly what our Career Adviser team does best. Our friendly experts will help you to
- develop a strategy that makes you stand out among your competitors for a given vacancy;
- decide which "headhunters" to talk to, and what to expect;
- identify the right networks and companies to contact;
- apply in a way that gets you "on top of the pile" of applications with a company;
- much, much more.
The other key feature for you to access the hidden job market between the U.S. and Germany is our CV Alert service. For more than 10 years now, companies in both countries have subscribed to our CV Alert: email applications from job seekers like yourself who don't wait for companies to advertise the "ideal job" for them. Some of our CV Alert users have heard back from companies within hours.
And suddenly, the hidden job market is not "hidden" anymore.

Q. I have heard that the Germany-USA Career Center originally started in Silicon Valley. How well does the Career Center cover other regions and industries?
The Germany-USA Career Center is headquartered near Boston, Massachusetts. This is closer to some of the "hotbeds" of this cross-border market on the East Coast and in the so-called "Rust Belt." The majority of our job applicants, as well as of the employers using the Germany-USA Career Center, is based all over the U.S. and Canada, as well as in the German-speaking European countries.
Moreover, other than less specialized recruiting firms, who are usually not familiar with this particular market, and unlike the German American Chambers of Commerce, which have only very few regional offices in the United States, the Germany-USA Career Center works with companies and applicants all over North America, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Q. Someone suggested distributing my resume through German American online groups or mailing lists. Would this get me a job?
Keep in mind that these lists are often insufficiently monitored by their hosts, if at all. Your chances of landing a job through such a list or group are slim.
On the other hand, the risks of falling prey to idendity theft or spamsters is extremely high. Keep in mind that you don't have any control whatsoever over who may get hold of your CV this way.
^ TOP
Q. I signed up for the Germany-USA Job Mail service , but have not received any messages with job postings so far. Why?
One possible reason is that your e-mail spam filter is blocking or deleting list messages. One of the largest free e-mail providers in Germany, for example, for years prevented its Germany-based users from receiving pernission-based messages requested and sent from legitimate U.S. companies.
Make sure to hit the "No Spam" button in your inbox when receiving messages from the Germany-USA Career Center!

Q. How can I find an internship position with an American company?
First, upload your resume into the Resume Library (pick one of the "Internship" catgories). We recommend to use the "CV Alert" service (offered once you have uploaded your CV) to proactively distribute your internship application to the right companies.
Additional tips can be obtained from the internship organizations (USA and Germany) listed on our Links page, and through our Career Adviser team.

Q. How much does it cost for job seekers to use the Germany-USA Career Center?
Membership in the Germany-USA Career Center is FREE for applicants. Other than the German American Chamber of Commerce chapters or German American business associations, we do not - and will not - charge individual membership fees for job seekers.
A word of caution: It pays to read the fine print, i.e. User Agreements! One of those organizations allows job seekers to upload their application free of charge, but then actually charges them for access to their own resume when they need to modify or update it in the organization's database.
Uploading resumes, modifying, updating and keeping them on file for potential employers is free of charge at the Germany-USA Career Center. There are also no charges once you get hired by one of our clients.
Our services are paid for by the hiring company. We will not ask you to provide credit card information or Social Security Number when creating your applicant profile.
